Cats and Dogs...and Herbs
by Barbara A. Baker

Animals respond well to herbs, just as humans do. The key is to find a way to get the herbs into them. Some four-leggeds prefer herbs in a liquid format; sometimes hiding herbal capsules in a bit of food will get them down; then there are those pets who don't know the stuff is good for them and they willingly eat it all up.

In general, the same herbs can be used for animals as in similar situations with children. There are some notable exceptions so it is always wise to check with an herbalist or holistic vet. The below information is for educational purposes only.

Arthritis -- alfalfa is an alkalizer; burdock helps to purify blood; organic sulphur as an alkalizer and detoxifier; yucca strengthens the adrenals and promotes the production of natural anti-inflammatories; for severe pain use a compress of chickweed, valerian, and rosemary.

Diarrhea -- slippery elm settles the gastrointestinal tract; catnip tea settles the intestines; acidophilus supplements recolonize the bowel with proper bacteria. Worms ‚ garlic, black walnut hulls, and acidophilus given for one lunar month twice a year.

Dull coat -- shows poor general nutritional health; a combination of kelp, alfalfa, and dandelion will provide a good mineral and vitamin supplement.

Cold, flu -- golden seal, licorice root, and ginger can be used in combination or individually.

Fleas -- fresh clove or garlic will keep fleas from infesting your pet (do not use if your pet is pregnant as garlic can act as an abortifacient in animals); add a few drops of vinegar in the water; add brewer's yeast (one teaspoon for small pets per day) in their food; daily use a flea comb dipped in a light mixture of water, penny royal oil or tea tree oil.
