My Own Healing Story

by Mary Grace McCord

Right around 9/11, I started realizing persistent physical dis-ease. At first I blamed the unbalance on post-traumatic anxiety and sorrow—which may have contributed because when they appeared, I allowed them to dwell. By early 2002, I was officially diagnosed with lymphoma.

As a writer who specializes in holistic health and metaphysics, I know that I am beyond blessed that my daily work puts me in touch with countless beacons of healing light and divine insight.

Cancer comes to teach us. I am learning not to fritter away precious energies on anything that does not need me, personally. I am learning to detach from outcomes. I am learning to be still, listen within, and know. I am learning that anger, fear and worry are bound to visit, but essential to release.

I have learned healing from labyrinths, deep breathing, slap-stick comedy, and especially the soothing, healing powers of nature: lifting one’s eyes to sunlight, trees and stars also lifts one’s outlook; waterfalls, waves and still ponds can all soothe jangled nerves. Caring for a precious animal, nurturing (as a newlywed, both giving and receiving), bolstering close relationships while friends process their own fears and shock, and blessedly releasing all that is past: I feel astonishing power as all this flows through, pulses through and rips through at times, but ultimately takes me higher.

Rather than dwell within the limited, physical realm of cancer, I am learning to choose unbounded gratitude. So I thank the AIHT students and graduates, spiritual leaders / holistic healers who inspire me on this journey by sharing from their hearts.

Maybe later I will tell you about The Bio-Medical Center, previously called The Hoxsey Clinic.

I appreciate how coworkers are enduring my sudden torrential tears as well as shrieks of laughter. Both releases are particularly healing, albeit disruptive at times. I especially want to thank our benevolent Creator and this entire friendly universe, for all things, always. Let the appreciation start with quotes from two AIHT graduates I have met and worked with, whom I value as mentors and as confidantes.

Mary Grace McCord and Larry Dossey, M.D.

From AIHT alumni and curriculum:

Nothing in life happens to you, it happens for you. Reiki Master Susan Chamberlain, Ph.D.

No more denial. Your higher Self knows when you’re lying! Bruce Schneider, Ph.D., author of Relax! You’re Already Perfect

The wounded heart has to break in two, in order to fully open itself to joy overflowing. Paraphrased from A Course in Miracles. Another from ACIM: We are on a journey of no beginning, to a place we never left.

From my local Unity church, and from recent visits to other Unity churches:

I am willing to see things a different way. The Rev. Jerry Bartholow of Unity of Birmingham, and author of Peace Soup, on meditative affirmations.

Tell cancer you love it, and make sure you mean it. Larry Murphey, visiting healer from Daytona Beach, Florida

We cannot escape divine love. Regardless of the challenge we face, we are always free to accept and embrace divine support. The Rev. Geoff Davis, Unity of Sedona, Arizona

From media interviews:

There’s so much evidence out there now that prayer makes a tremendous difference in how this world works, including the world of health, longevity and physical outcomes. Larry Dossey, M.D.

If two of you agree on earth (and hold hands) and ask The Father, it shall be done in heaven. Patti Cathcart of Tuck and Patti, paraphrasing Matthew 18:19, at The Center for Spiritual Enlightenment, San Jose, California

I am not my hair! (I am infinitely more than this physical body.) Neale Donald Walsch

Our minds carry more pollution than our bodies, for they carry not only our own toxicity but that of the entire world. We must cleanse our toxic fears, anxiety, stress, and pain: in ourselves, our families, our nation, and all over the planet. Marianne Williamson

Meditation will help you recover, as will medication. Both require repetition and devotion; there is no substitute for practice. Herbert Benson, M.D.
